Super Tues + Mardi Gras = SUPER FAT TUESDAY

Sunday, February 3rd, 2008

Can’t decide whether to go out on Mardi Gras and laissez les bon temps rouler, or stay in and feed your inner political junkie with results from the Super Tuesday primaries?

Well, then, behold SUPER FAT TUESDAY: mardi gras bacchanalia and up-to-the-minute primary coverage all rolled into one! Yes, Traction’s at it again, stirring up a blend of the two best things to happen in February.*

How, you ask, is this possible? The plan goes like this:
Gather at the Fishmonger oyster bar, because nothing says N’awlins like oysters, cher. If oysters don’t do it for you, we’ll have other bayou faves like gumbo, plus beer, king cake, gen-u-ine Mardi Gras beads, a kickass Cajun soundtrack and a big screen TV for your red vs. blue exit-poll-viewing pleasure.

RSVPs appreciated: superfat@getTraction.org

Death of a Hellraiser: Molly Ivins, columnist, dead at 62

Thursday, February 1st, 2007

“Keep fighting for freedom and justice…but don’t forget to have fun doin’ it. Let your laughter ring forth. Be outrageous, ridicule the fraidy-cat, rejoice in all the oddities that freedom can produce. And when you get through kickin’ ass and celebratin’ the sheer joy of a good fight, be sure to tell those who come after how much fun it was.”

-Molly Ivins, from 1993

The Grande Dame of Texas Politics

Thank you, Molly. Seeing you speak in 2004 was a highlight for me. May you rest in peace, knowing that — between the tears — we’ll all be having some good belly laughs reading your words today.

More On Voting Machines

Friday, April 28th, 2006

Over the past couple of months here at Traction’s website, we’ve been writing and writing about voting rights and the dangers of electronic voting machines. Over at DailyKos this morning, diarist reprehensor has a little nugget for you to chew on. He digs into the archives at VerifiedVoting.org and offers up a “sample of the thousands of ‘anomalies’ that were reported to the [Election Incident Reporting System] during the 2004 election.” (He also invokes Mark Crispin Miller who wrote an absolutely essential essay in Harper’s last year for anyone who’s worried about the integrity of American elections. Make sure you read it if you’ve not yet had the chance to do so.)
